One option that I have often thought for confederate monuments is to list the history along with them. That the real time and reason why they were constructed. Have a detailed plaque, audio visual or any other source to inform everyone the real story behind the confederate statues and what those men represent.

I think if they are completely removed and replaced it gives chance for some to falsely glorify those removed as heroes.
