I think part of the problem is also that the effects of climate change may not seem direct - a killer storm, a pandemic, a bad harvest - all are related to the climate "cancer" - perhaps the symptoms of a growing "tumor" but they can and are easily confused as isolated events. The next person on the street may not fathom that the frequency of all of the aforementioned events has increased and would continue to rise - backed by the climate "cancer"!
